About this treatment

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment that works through the surface muscles to reach the deeper layers of muscle, tendon and fascia. Your RMT uses slow strokes, sustained pressure and targeted techniques such as trigger point therapy and cross-fibre friction to break up areas of tightness that a lighter massage cannot reach.

It is not about pushing as hard as possible. Good deep tissue work is gradual and controlled, so the muscle relaxes and lets the pressure in. At Flow Again Massage in Red Deer, your therapist checks in throughout the session and adjusts the depth to what feels productive for you.

Who it helps

Who Deep Tissue Massage Is For

Deep tissue massage is one of the most requested treatments at our Red Deer clinic. It is often a good fit if you:

  • Have tight, sore muscles that keep coming back
  • Work in a physical job in the trades, oil and gas, farming or warehousing
  • Sit for long hours and feel it in your neck, shoulders and low back
  • Train hard and carry stiffness in your legs, hips or back
  • Get tension headaches linked to tight neck and shoulder muscles
  • Prefer firm pressure and find relaxation massage too light

Your session

What to Expect

Your first appointment starts with a short health history and a conversation about where you feel pain or tightness, what makes it worse, and your goals. Your RMT may check your posture and how you move before starting.

During the massage, your therapist warms the tissue first, then works deeper into the problem areas. Some spots may feel tender, but it should never be sharp or unbearable. Tell your therapist if you want more or less pressure at any time.

It is normal to feel some soreness for a day or two afterwards, similar to after a workout. Drinking water, gentle movement and the stretches your RMT shows you will help.

FAQ

Deep Tissue Massage Questions

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It can feel intense in tight areas, but it should not be painful. Your RMT will work within your comfort level and adjust the pressure as you go.

How often should I get a deep tissue massage?

For a specific problem, your RMT may suggest weekly or every-other-week sessions at first, then less often as you improve. Many clients come monthly for maintenance.

Is deep tissue massage covered by insurance?

Yes, when provided by a Registered Massage Therapist it is covered by most extended health plans, and we direct bill many insurers.

What is the difference between deep tissue and Swedish massage?

Swedish massage uses lighter, flowing strokes for relaxation. Deep tissue uses slower, firmer pressure to treat specific areas of tension.
